If you’re into cars or motorcycles, WCC’s campus is the place to be Saturday, Sept. 14. That’s the date for the 10th Annual Cars & Bikes on Campus show, which will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in parking lots 2 and 3.
Actually, the show is the place to be even if you’re not a car or motorcycle enthusiast because it will offer something for everyone. There will be music by WCC’s Basic Jazz Combo (weather permitting), face painting and other activities for kids hosted by WCC’s Child Care Professional program, food and beverages, open houses in many WCC departments, and even a robot programmed by WCC students that serves coffee.
Nonetheless, the highlight will be the 150 or more cars and motorcycles on display. They’ll run the gamut from “rare, really expensive classics to daily drives with maybe just a little flair,” said Justin Carter, an Automotive Services instructor at WCC who’s coordinating the show. The cars and motorcycles will compete for more than a dozen trophies.
Also popular is the annual dyno shootout, where motorcycle owners can see whose bike has the most horsepower.
Show visitors also will be able to stop by open houses at a number of WCC departments, including automotive, motorcycle, welding, and HVAC. The open houses will feature everything from information about the latest technologies to displays of student projects.
The 10th edition of the annual car show features some changes from previous years, most notably in the show’s day and date. It’s on Saturday instead of Sunday, and during the second weekend in September instead of the first weekend in October. Both changes are designed to increase participation, especially by current and future students, Carter said. The shift to September also will make it less likely that bad weather will disrupt the event.
Another innovation this year is the addition of a silent auction. It will primarily feature items for automotive and motorcycle enthusiasts.
All show proceeds go to the Vocational Technologies Scholarship Fund to help WCC students pay for their education.
